They have no other means of support than the TV show and all of the magazine interviews and pictures.  They make their living being a circus.  And now they want privacy?

The 'Free Market' will decide. It will decide that the United States cannot consume 25% of the world's resources and the upper 1% cannot control 50% of the wealth.

Mr. Duggar is a successful real estate developer in an area that has had very rapid growth over the past 15-20 years.  We (I live 10 miles or so south of them.) are in the shadow of Walmart and Tyson Chicken.

Houses are still being built.    Yes, the reality show helped, but it is probably not even their primary source of income.  It is, however, probably a great trophy for them as it is a chance for them to get their message out.

Disclosure:  I have never watched the show, nor do I intend to.

If the Duggars are circus freaks, so are the people on American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, the Dog Whisperer, American Pickers, Frontier House, Crocodile Hunter, The Bachelor, COPS, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, The Biggest Loser, Supernanny, Survivor, Scare Tactics, Animal Cops, Who Wants to be a Millionaire, Bridezillas, America's Got Talent, The Apprentice, and a few hundred other shows that millions of Americans watch every day.

Seeking fame may be an unusual characteristic of the folks inhabiting Daily Kos, but it's certainly something not unique to the Duggars among the general populace of this country. (Although anyone who's been excited about having a diary on the Rec List might want to examine themselves.)

The entertainment industry is a vast sector of the job market, which employs brazillions of people and is worth a metric crapton of money. These people are no more and no less than any other entertainers. And if they should quit this job and do some other more "worthy" occupation, then so should every other tv entertainer. If the question is that of exploiting their kids, then America's Funniest Home Videos should quit asking parents to send in footage of children doing silly things in hopes of winning a $100,000 prize. Every child performer should be forced to quit.
