Russian police have apparently been acting with extreme restraint, courtesy and dignity compared to the practices of their American brethren.

They are right now, but it's because their initial (and very violent) reaction when the protests started have caused the government to back off in the face of backlash.   Over the first 48 hours there were at least hundreds and possibly over a thousand people arrested in Moscow and St. Petersburg, beatings of detainees, broken bones, the whole shebang.  Videos and photos of the violence caused an eruption of support in social media, and the massive turnout of protesters over the weekend.  Right now Putin is in a tough spot and trying to figure out his options: the police brutality backfired, and he faces elections in three months.

The Russian crisis is definitely still on the ascending curve.

any further violence would be counterproductive.  It's looking more and more like his strategy will be to wait it out; so I hope the protests keep building momentum.  Something has to change.
