We have manufacturing in Oregon, too. But there's not enough of it.

That being said, we're a country on two oceans (well, three, technically) and not all of the goods coming into Portland and Tacoma and Oakland and Long Beach are being imported from abroad. And some of the goods are outgoing, too. Every day they sit in a shipping container hurts local businesses; some of them, like Intel and Apple, are gargantuan MNCs, and some of them, some of the small farms and fisheries, some of the small canneries, could really use the money.

We do need to bring manufacturing back to the States. I think that should be a top priority. It's disappointing that the Clinton administration and then the Bush administration went on an outsourcing binge after the fall of the Iron Curtain; we're still hurting from that today.

But I don't see how punishing blue-collar dockworkers and exporters two weeks before Christmas helps us reverse those policies.

Sure, it would be easier if dockworkers and draymen weren't sitting idle, but that's a decision our own political leaders need to make - keeping rewarding companies who ship jobs overseas or fix the US economy and bring jobs back.

It's their decision, its Obama's decision, not the protestors.
