    It's not always unanimous, it means that you blockade and/or occupy your place of work so that commerce is shut down. Not all workers agree with the strike when it happens.

    Labor law states that wildcat strikes, general strikes, and most forms of strikes are illegal, so the workers, particularly the union leadership must be careful.

    General strikes in the 30s, 40s, and 60s created the political climate leading to the New Deal/Great Society as well as rising wages.

    As for the going home without pay, it's a temporary sacrifice which hopefully pays off with higher wages,  better benefits, shorter hours, safer workplaces etc.
