  •  It gets worse. much worse. (7+ / 0-)

IF you forget about the carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide primary byproducts of burning...

and IF you forget about the vast array of toxic byproducts from burning natural gas that naturally is riddled with a wide array of other chemical compounds....

THEN you get down to the most basic issue: burning inherently consumes oxygen.

Atmospheric oxygen is all due to photosynthetic life -- and that pretty much breaks down into plant matter that is alive now, and dead plant matter that has never oxidized (sequestered underground; "fossil fuel").

As aggregate plant biomass above ground keeps shrinking due to animal (humans and friends) activity (chopping rainforest to graze cattle, overgrazing of grassland, desertification, sprawl and pavement, and other faces of voracious consumption)....

and As aggregate sequestered plant biomass below ground keeps shrinking due to ever-more-potent prospecting for and exploiting of solid (coal, shale, tarsand), liquid (oil), and gas (natural gas: methane) pockets....

the simple but inconvenient truth is:

the level of atmospheric oxygen is falling.

During the long periods when human DNA was being evolved, atmospheric oxygen concentration were up near 30%. With agriculture and then industry, atmospheric oxygen concentration is down around 20%. And in polluted urban environments, oxygen can be in the teens.

Lack of oxygen is hypothesized to be at the root of a variety of diseases.

If the current very-negative-for-life carbon-oxidation-positive-feedback-loop keep rolling.... and atmospheric oxygen levels keep falling....

well, there's a word for what happens when an animal, or a human, or your mom, or your dad, or your son, or your daughter cant get enough oxygen.
