is in favor of dialogue with China, recognizing that they are on their way up (but not saying that we are on our way down).
He also specifically mentioned their superiority in strategic thinking.

Obama is sending 2500 troops to Australia, to be available in the China Sea.

    •  that's not a contradiction (0+ / 0-)

or difference in opinion, and Obama has, through Hunstman and Gary Locke, done a fair bit of dialogue.  2,500 marines in Australia aren't going to do jack, and China knows it.  There are a lot of other countries in Asia where a small marine contingent may prove useful, (Indonesia, Philippines) and to my knowledge Huntsman hasn't criticized putting the troops there, either.

"superiority in strategic thinking" is a troublesome thing to say.  It's either an endorsement of autocracy or some sort of "oh those inscrutable Chinamen."  Chou-en Lai wasn't being wise when he said it was too soon to tell about the French Revolution, except to the extent he was wise to make people in the West think he was wise.  The Chinese government, though, has largely boxed itself into a corner, where it's screwed if its currency appreciates, economically, and screwed if it doesn't, politically.  And the response has been relatively ham-handed.  I don't get a lot of long term strategic planning vibe out of the approach of (a) make everything dirt cheap as possible, and (b) educate and develop cities as rapidly as possible and create a class with demands for consumer goods.  If i wanted a quick buck, i'd invest in China.  If i wanted to invest for the longer term, i'd much prefer Japan, South Korea, or India.
