  •  Strictly an electoral calculus. (12+ / 0-)

Obama has determined that the number of centrist  voters who would be turned off by allowed teenage girls to access the "morning after" pill ... is larger than the number of progressives who will be fail to vote based on denying teenage girls this access.

Yes, what's important to the audience they're catering to, is not preventing unintended pregnancy; it is ensuring that sex has consequences.

And for those of us who think the converse, well, where ya gonna run to?  Paternalistic prudery is a turn-off, but not a big enough turn-off to drive most of us into the arms of the even-more-paternalistic Republicans.

    •  & Because too many will cower about Naderite lies (0+ / 0-)

and run around flapping their arms about "lessor of two evil", this shit happens.

It is time to STOP supporting sell outs.

      I also think you're only 1/2 right.

There are a LOT of Dems who think that there is this enormous pool of "centrists" - I think they're naifs or they're manipulators who are full of shit.

Supposedly this pool of "centrists" won't be scared against 0-sell-0ut cuz he's proven himself -

how many fucking compromises, going back to Tip O'Neil on social security, have these bastards "had" to do or ...

the fascists will lie, the "center" will get scared, and we'll lose!

IF ronnie raygun can sell his fucking lies, and georgie the drunk coke head rich kid can sell his lies,

THEN how the dems can NOT sell good policy?

      1. Cuz they're incompetent, (oh boo hoo, we're so noble and so selfless and so goodererer), OR

      2. Cuz they're fucking sell outs?

I've been uncomfortable with excuse #1 for decades - I don't LIKE reason #2, but it sure fits the facts of the last 3 decades a lot better.

      •  Hmmm, well (0+ / 0-)

The center doesn't have to be enormous, it only has to be tip a few percent either way.

Sadly, it does fees like not all that many try that hard to sell good policy, but some do.  For instance, my senator Tom Udall does pretty well overall IMO.  He gets consistently good ratings from all such entities as ACLU, HRC, NARAL, Sierra, etc. ; he consistently opposed PATRIOT and Iraq from day one, and so on.

I guess I think they don't try harder to sell good policy  because they don't think anybody's buying.  They think American citizens by and large are consumerist, short-sighted, and ignorant -- and I fear there might be a little something in that.  And when money = speech + access, quite effectively ... well...

I don't know that there has ever been any society that was at bottom an oligarchy.  Maybe here and there from time to time, it's hard to say definitely.  But by and large, governance is by the privileged, yes?  Given that, I'll take the ones who offer a slightly kinder, slightly gentler oligarchy.  Personally I'm willing to work and donate for change, but unfortunately not all that willling to get beat up or go to jail for it .
