move on this but I'm really tired of reading this kind of childish tripe from FPers:

"as the father of two daughters," he thinks sexual puritanism and paternalism should trump science.

    •  I am the father of 2 daughters...and I agree with (8+ / 0-)

      that statement.

It's funny how the left can dish it out, and then get all outraged when they themselves reject science.

    •  It IS puritanism and paternalism. (2+ / 0-)

Puritanism may be a loaded term, but it is perfectly congruent with beliefs that unsanctioned sex is wrong and should be prevented whereever possible.  Paternalism may sound derogatory, but it is not an unfair description for the belief that parents can and should regulate the sexual behavior of their adolescents.

Obama has chosen parental control over young people's autonomy.  You may think that's a good thing or you may think it's a bad thing, but it IS the choice that he made.

"Puritanism" - yes it's a loaded term.  Both terms the author uses are inflammatory and she clearly means it that way.  The diarist is likely to get the kind of discussion that her terms establish in the diary.

What is missing here is the recognition of the specific ages HHS has voiced concerns about.  Whether or not one thinks "unsanctioned sex is wrong" or no matter how much autonomy people feel a young adolescent should have, I think that most of us probably agree that if a child of 10 - 13 is pregnant then there are serious problems in that child's life that need to get flagged somehow and hopefully attended to by a responsible person.  "Puritanism" doesn't enter into it.  I don't pretend to know the solution for these kids.  I wish I did.

I actually lean toward  reversing the HHS decision.  But I just think there are points worth discussing in a less heated way.  I see this slogan about how they "overruled science".  As a scientist I have to ask, "where is the science based diary without the skewed langauge?"

        •  A reasonable answer (0+ / 0-)

and realistically, most people's feelings do distinguish between the pre-teens, young teens, and older teens when it comes to onset of sexual activity.   The devil is often in the details, and I could have used to know a bit more of the details on age cohorts, definitions, etc.

I think we all know the hypothetical "pregnant 10-12 year old" is a sick fantasy.

But somewhere around 14 or 15, kids DO start behaving in pretty predictable ways ... and these kids are also pretty accurate predicting whether "My Father will KILL me" is a rhetorical embellishment or a real possibility.
