        ...and it isn't South Carolina's status as an influential player in GOP politics. It's because South Carolina's Republican voters go out of their way to vote for the person they perceive will win, rather than for the candidate that best reflects their views.

        IOW, they're low-information voters right up to the point at which they push the button on the ESE voting machine set up to give the impression that it's recording their votes.

          The only one of the early states.  A lot of indies vote in it, and a good bunch of Dems will probably do so this year.  The openness moderates the nominee choice.

            I'm looking forward to voting against Michele Bachmann in a few months. Since I've never voted in a primary that matters before (I'm from NY, lived in FL, and have  been officially without party affiliation for most of the last 20 years) I'm looking forward to it.
