  •  Obnoxious obsession with "race" (0+ / 0-)

I am offended by the way the Census Bureau focuses on "race".  In 1790 and through 1860, there was a constitutional reason to count slaves as 3/5 of a person; I get that.  But nowadays it makes no sense.  The Census is simply supporting the ridiculous pseudo-scientific theories of Blumenbach, who created the "five races" idea in the late eighteenth century based on his obsession with skulls.

As part of the ACS, it is reasonable to ask people how they classify themselves ethnically.  And for that matter religiously, though I don't think that's legal any more.  But instead they're essentially enshrining Blumenbach's foolishness, designed at the time to justify European racism, into law, which helps maintain false boundaries and ignore equally real categorizations.

    •  I don't get your difference between the ACS (0+ / 0-)

and the census regarding race. People are also self-classifying in the census as well. There is no one going door to door measuring skulls and making assignments.

I find the reason for counting race 1860 and earlier exponentially more obnoxious than it being counted now.

      •  Blumenbach (0+ / 0-)

The piont is that the short form (decennial) asks everyone in the country to classify themselves per Blumenbach, the latest variant being multiple entries per person.  But the Blumenbach classes were a lie, and have been used to divide Americans.

        •  I've never subscribed to the school of thought (0+ / 0-)

that the way to stop racism is to ignore race  (assuming of course you believe stopping racism to be a worthy goal).
