But the assertion that "the successor is likely to be worse than the father" strains credibility for me.

        •  Why? (0+ / 0-)

They're getting a young man who has led a shallow, spoiled and coddled existence so far, who has not yet embarrassed himself with any shows of great intelligence or cleverness, and who's just had this leadership position dropped into his lap. He hasn't been openly groomed for it, and he's going to need to consolidate power somehow, and fast. According to his former sushi chef, one of the guy's main talents is drinking a lot. And he was picked because of his ruthless streak. This doesn't sound like a recipe for an improvement to me.

At the same time, I truly hope I'm totally wrong here and he turns out to be a wise and benevolent leader.

Because his father was such a horror that he stood by idly while probably hundreds of thousands of his countrymen/-women starved to death. How would this young fellow be likely to be worse than that?

but one obvious thing that could be worse would be seriously heating up the war with the south. I can see that leading to not only mass starvation, but also other things, like disease, mass murder, environmental damage, etc.. From my perspective, that's worse.

The kid will probably feel the need to show he's strong, to show he's the one in charge, and not all the generals around him. Again, I hope I'm wrong, but I see the arrows pointing to the scenario that he does start something.
