thread on the Anglican list about liturgical disasters. The one that seems apropos tonight was one about a brand-new eucharistic minister who was serving for the first time on Christmas Eve. The first person he was communicating was a woman in a Large Hat. It's probably no surprise that most ministers have no fondness for women in Large Hats; trying to serve them a chalice is a largely random act unless they take the initiative and bring the chalice toward them decisively.

This EM was not so lucky. He did his best aiming the chalice under the Large Hat, but the contents ended up all over the altar rail and floor. Flummoxed he asked the celebrant what to do and was sent off to the sacristy to gather up lots of purificators and mopped away, piously. Once that was cleaned up, he refilled the chalice and tried again. This time he got a gentle old man, who started to receive and noticed that the EM had missed some wine on the molding of the altar rail. As the old man pointed it and they looked at it, the chalice tipped again and... you guessed it. The contents were all poured out.

At least this time the EM knew what to do. He headed back to the sacristy, further ravaged the supply of purificators and came back for a second round of mopping, piously. By the time he was finished, so were all the congregation. He had served on Christmas Eve and communed precisely zero people.

Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary? . . . and respect the dignity of every human being.
