  •  One big difference (5+ / 0-)

Stephen King can actually write, albeit popular fiction as opposed to literary.  Dan Brown probably has trouble writing a grocery list.

Popular fiction is all well and good, especially when it doesn't pretend to be anything but that.  I give Stephen King credit for understanding the difference, even though I've never really been a fan.

Dan Brown, on the other hand, is blessed only with neat ideas.  He'd be a great popular writer if he could somehow master the art of creating good characters, situations and dialogue, among other things.

    •  Same with Scott Turow (0+ / 0-)

If King wrote "serious literature" he'd be good at it. And I love Turow's sentences and he knows how to put together a good plot...better than John Grisham.
