    However, he published his account of the Crusades sixty years ago.   You might wish to read Malcolm Barber, whose work on the Templars was published only five years ago.  They were enormously influential for both good and bad, particularly in the areas of international trade and banking, and calling them "dirtbags" is, to be charitable, an exaggeration.
