    • New Mexico: PPP's batch of New Mexico miscellany finds surprisingly high approval numbers for its Republican governor (Susana Martinez) and both Democratic senators (Tom Udall and Jeff Bingaman, who is retiring). There are also some optimistic numbers on same-sex marriage as well (45-43 in favor).

Not surprised to find both R governor and both D senators popular despite a certain incongruity.  Martinez is attractive, quick, and (falsely IMO) considered "real" and genuine.

Re the numbers inching up for same-sex marriage -- this is an issue near and dear to my heart.  But I think it's too soon to celebrate.  A modest domestic-partners initiative has failed every few years, and the Catholic Church mobilizes like nobody's business (and my marriage is certainly NOT their business) whenever any real chance of gay equality begins to loom.

The church will bring national resources to bear, if need be.  And is far from unconnected with respect to the old-time political machine (D in the case of our fair state).  So they will continue to be able to block, IMO, until  more water under the bridge brings more of today's tolerant young adults into control.
