...if our opponents are weaklings like West and Ross (and Boehner), then we should be sticking it to them again and again. We can only hope.

The House Republicans' agreement to continue the tax rates (rather than increasing them) for a few weeks while they try to negotiate something they like better is no great capitulation on their part. We shouldn't count it as a great victory.

This has been painted as a total disaster for the GOP by the MSM.  It's like going in to halftime fresh off a touchdown - we can capitalize on the momentum.

The Baggers in the House have become so enraptured with their perceived power to slash and burn government spending that they wanted more.  They attached totally unrelated poison pills to what is basically a Constitutional responsibility of the House to approve tax related legislation.

Despite the fact that many of the congresscritters have no idea about the legislative process, what they were fighting for was about process.  Voters could care less about this and know even less.

The Dems and especially the President finally caught on to the fact that it is all about messaging and both did a bang up job with the "extra $40 in your paycheck" meme.  It has caught on and that is all that was needed.  Voters will remember this.

and it's also not true, which could come back to haunt the President and the Dems.

The cap on SS contributions is $106,800 and a 2% tax break on this maximum amount is $2136/yr, $178/mo and $44.50/wk.  Obviously, those who earn considerably less will receive a significantly lower tax break.

And as to "extra $40 in your paycheck", that is guaranteed to send employees to their payroll department.

This is a short term media victory with possible long term disappointment and mistrust and I'm surprised that the RW media hasn't figured this out.

messaging short, simple and didn't back off--and not equivocating the details like you note above.  This has always been the fatal flaw in their messaging and why it doesn't resonate with the American people.

I hope they have learned that this is what they need to keep doing moving forward on taxing the ultra wealthy, not tolerating any poison pills, and not giving away the store just to get small concessions.

And screw the RW media--they are not in the business of figuring out anything, any longer.

The President's "$40" website has been an amazing resource and he even had a couple of people who contacted him standing beside him at one of his appearances.

This is how it's done and I hope it continues.  I am a nitpicker and worrier by nature with a tad of OCD thrown in, so my analysis is based on that.

And, you are so right about the RW media.  They are quick to bitch and moan about the Obama's xmas card and taking Bo xmas shopping, but far too oblivious to figure out the details of the tax holiday.

was conceived far too quickly with no thought about how to explain that most wage earners are not currently receiving an "additional $40 in their paychecks" under the 2011 payroll tax holiday and that whatever they are receiving now will not increase.

Paychecks are not issued in any kind of regulated way either, so declaring that a specific extra amount will be in each paycheck is extremely dishonest.

This has been a good PR stunt but one which could turn into a media nightmare.  "The Dems and the President lied to the American Public", etc.

Dems stood together and it worked.  Reid knew that he could depend on his caucus and that gave him the courage to hold the line.

We are focusing on the dysfunction of the GOPers but the Dems have their share of inter-party problems.  We have far too many Blue-Dogs in the Senate for Reid to be able to pull this one off all the time.
