  •  You have no idea how hard it was to secure (7+ / 0-)

a diagnosis of Aspergers...seems that many psychologists can spot the symptoms but very few psychiatrists can. The school required a diagnosis from a psychiatrist. All we got from the psychiatrists were two ADD diagnoses and a ADHD diagnosis. And neurologists were equally unhelpful.
Finally we went to the Cody Center at Stonybrook U.
Obviously you know that ADD/ADHD and Autism/Aspergers go hand-in-hand, which makes a proper diagnosis difficult.

    •  Interesting that they claimed you had to have (6+ / 0-)

a diagnosis from a psychiatrist. In both KY and TN, a child can be tested by the psychologist for the district, and can be eligible to receive special services, even without a clinical diagnosis. I wonder if that is actually the law in your state, or merely a roadblock the district is trying to throw up in front of parents who seek services for their child.

      •  Definately a roadblock. (4+ / 0-)

The district will do everything they can to deny services.
I'm on Long Island, where schools are run like businesses.
If I knew then what I know now, I would have hired a lawyer five years ago. That's the only language these bastards understand.

          •  So far, it's been a very good school year. (5+ / 0-)

My daughter is attending a Montessori class every Saturday, which so far seems to be incredible.
She's met a lot of other people her age who also have Aspergers, and she's made some friends, which is a very new experience for all of us.
She now wants to be a psychologist when she grows up, so that she can help children with Aspergers.
