      There is a section of the 1947 book Zotz! where someone explains the underlying engine of the US economy, being waste.  Can't find the info online and don't have the book but it goes something like this (total made-up paraphrase):

      "You see that little puddle of mustard left on the edge of of your plate?  You might think it's just a waste, but it's really everything.  If that extra was not there - if you dispensed only the amount of mustard that you need, and everyone did the same, the results would be catastrophic.  Businesses would not be able to cope with the decline in demand.  People would be cast out of work.  Multiply this effect over our entire economy, and you'll see that those little bits of waste are really the foundation of our prosperity.  So when you leave that bit of mustard, don't feel bad.  Be proud, because you are helping America."

      We shall not participate in our own destruction.
