Up front, I am more than delighted with the new standards.

However, because I have some familiarity with those on the fringe (the right one, not the left one), I'm suspicious right away that differences in testing, cultural influences, and margin of error will make any empirical analysis meaningless, or, at best, inconclusive.

Secondly, from my association with the above people, the single lesson we've all learned (and maybe the first) is that the distribution of achievement (and particularly spectacular achievement) in that top 2% isn't markedly different from the rest of the bell curve, or at least above the 50th percentile. In other words, there are plenty of brilliant people who have not invented a thing, nor contributed significant research, nor otherwise enriched humanity aside from their presence.

Still, and I repeat myself, good news on the new standards.

      1.  Re your first objection, "Let's put aside any question about the accuracy" really was meant to put it aside. I should have, perhaps, written something like 'no matter how one measures 'intelligence' (with a recognition that "the" IQ test has a huge set of flaws/problems), mercury poisoning lowers intelligence across the population ...'

      2.  Well, I'm wondering about the 'long tail' of the 'long tail' in terms of achievement and impact on society.  With all due respect, someone on the 'low' end tail is far less likely to leave a major 'positive' mark than someone in the 'high' end tail.
