    But seriously?

Turn us into a coal colony for China

Just like we consider Saudi Arabia to be an Oil Colony for the USA?  Yeah.. they seem WAY oppressed in their oil-producing servitude.

There is an argument to be made here.  And it is a bit tenuous to balance the overall climate goals against the needed market for US exports in a struggling economy....but hyperbole is not going to help your case.

    •  Look at it this way (7+ / 0-)

Exporting hydrocarbons to China and importing manufactured goods is not a strategy for long-term job development.  Resource extraction economies suffer greatly from political corruption, and regional resource extraction leads to regional corruption, concentration of wealth and political power.

The comparison with Saudi Arabia is not really a very good one because Saudi Arabia is not a political rival and is not taking away our manufacturing jobs.

What are we exporting to China?  Pork?  Oil?  Corn?  Soybeans?  Once we become primarily an exporter of energy and agricultural raw materials, we are indeed well on our way to being an economic colony.

    •  We ship raw materials, they ship finished goods... (9+ / 0-)

...that's practically the definition of a colony.

the terms of the exchange make the difference between a commodity exporting country and a colony. in a colony, not just raw materials but net capital itself is extracted, so that it subsidizes the metropole at its expense.

not an ounce of coal out of the ground ever again anywhere ever. if this means losing jobs or hurting the economy, so be it. if we can't meet our energy needs without coal than we need to export a worldwide one child policy from china as well and get the planet down to half its current population or less. it will get there anyway with all the greedhead enviro-rapists out there anyway i suppose.
