Exporting hydrocarbons to China and importing manufactured goods is not a strategy for long-term job development.  Resource extraction economies suffer greatly from political corruption, and regional resource extraction leads to regional corruption, concentration of wealth and political power.

The comparison with Saudi Arabia is not really a very good one because Saudi Arabia is not a political rival and is not taking away our manufacturing jobs.

What are we exporting to China?  Pork?  Oil?  Corn?  Soybeans?  Once we become primarily an exporter of energy and agricultural raw materials, we are indeed well on our way to being an economic colony.
