small amounts of liquid fuels (since liquid fuels are uniquely useful) IF (big if) ALL electricity WORLDWIDE was produced without using coal or any other fossil fuel.  Not under any other circumstances.

gas produces very large amounts of CO2.  For a given amount of energy in the fuel, this produces far more CO2 than using oil based fuels.

The CO2 exhaust from coal/liquids plants is relatively concentrated, and can be gathered for sequestering. In Montana they could use CO2 to recover more domestic oil from underground deposits.

Ten or fifteen years from now "real" oil from a well will be much scarcer and more expensive.  For those few uses for which liquid fuel is really required, oil from coal may prove to be the most affordable.  It will have to be used sparingly because it's expensive.  Nearly everything will have been converted to electric or muscle power.
