    Be a Criminal Problem.

In 1973, the U.S. had 200,000 people in its prisons.  Today, after spending billions, if not trillions, on the War on Drugs, we have over 2,000,000 people incarcerated.

Legalize all drugs, use the savings to offer treatment to those who may need it when they are free and cheap.  Portugal has done this successfully, and its drug addiction rates have substantially decreased, while the number of those applying for treatment has doubled.

    •  Portugal did not legalize all drugs (0+ / 0-)

The drugs remain illegal. They decriminalized drug use.  I think there are profound dangers to actually legalizing drugs. You don't really want to see corporations marketing heroin to children or selling cocaine laced soft drinks to children, do you?

Many product sold legally are dangerous to kid.

Frankly, it might be safer to sell kids heroin than put corn syrup in nearly everything they eat.

Heaven knows, alcohol and tobacco is legal, and both cause much more damage to everyone than marijuana.

Certainly, motorcycles, dirt bikes and other off-road vehicles, even cars, can be deadly.  Car accidents cause about 33,000 deaths a year, while marijuana causes none.  Should we have a "War n Cars"?

      •  Many of the illegal drugs (0+ / 0-)

have legal uses. Cocaine used to be used often in ER medicine and was available in pharmaceutical grade fromsome drug companies. The war on drugs messed with this as well tracking hospital usage looking for any descrepency and making life miserable for all.

There are many ways to make drugs legal they need not be made available over the counter.
