  •  One of the best books I've ever read: "The Slave (1+ / 0-)

Ship, a Human History", by Marcus Rediker:

Incredible writing, deep research, powerful storytelling, and there were so many times when I read this book when I felt sick to my stomach, cried, or just had to put the book down and think and process.  It changed my life and the way I thought about how to understand what slavery and slave trading did to people--- and not just slaves and African communities, but to the wide range of people who were involved in the industry, from sailors to boat builders to factors to investors.  Rediker shows how slavery underlies our Western system of capitalist commercialism and the human toll that it took, and continues to take, on our societies.

That's one more thing to add to my long list of small problems. --my son, age 10
