Here is the company web site.  It looks like they haven't found a way to really cash in yet against the competition of the multi-national manufacturers of less efficient, more conventional turbines.

However, if the original MIT article correctly reported the capability of the design, it should only be a matter of time before the design becomes a factor in the market. So far, though, there isn't much sign of that.

    •  if they were smart... (5+ / 0-)

... they would license their technology to the major manufacturers (and collect their royalties), rather than try to manufacture and sell all of the items themselves.

is not the smart strategy in general.

        Incumbants often buy and bury.

Incumbants often appropriate (learning ideas from your pitch... all the way to wholesale theft of system designs) without even buying.

Incumbants often have hidden loyalties.... or very obvious loyalties to the status quo and their cash cows.

Incumbants are by nature more conservative than upstarts... and that conservatism leaks into many areas, from business arrangements to electoral politics.

Incumbants often block access to markets for small players -- so it all the more important for those with breakthrough ideas to punch holes in thoses blockages, create fresh new channels, and as they grow those channels, they also can help newer positive innovators get to market. "Bypassing the dinosaurs" is both a means and an end. Its super smart to figure out how to do the bypass, and its super super smart to actually accomplish the bypass, and reap the people+profit+planet rewards.

Incumbants will take the lion's share of the cashflow.

        Alternative?

Meditate on the history of Apple (starting from their early attempt to license Apple I to HP).

Then think about your favorite startups and upstarts that have changed the world.

        Then think about the politics.

        Then think about activism.

        And commitment.

        And passion.

#3: ensure network neutrality; #2: ensure electoral integrity; #1: ensure ecosystemic sustainability.
