some years ago had a poor experience with the mechanics of a solar electric system.  I guess they had to have a number of repairs from it.

There are other discussions we need to have first, before we're able to get down to the electrical system.  The next project, which she has reluctantly agreed to, is adding R18 worth of insulation to the vaulted ceilings over most of the house since the roof is being replaced anyway.  It's 3" worth, and the roofing company says anything more will not look good and will perhaps necessitate more than just rehanging the gutters to get it blended in to the siding.  We'll see how much that helps the utility bills, and then go from there.

I'm interested in the solar panels myself, but that's just going to come along and perhaps in another year or two the technology will improve to the point where we can do even better with the results.

Were allowed to progress after we started down the road of alternatives some forty years ago you'd not only already have something that blends well with your, actually your wife's, wants but we'd be The leader at least in this one area as we were in numerous area's before.

But alas, even if the special interests had allowed it the skills and innovative workers idea's etc. probably would have been moved offshore as the others but also the technologies we had started. They now have the experienced trades and have developed those where we've lost most of!!

Hey, your wife is agreeing to some green stuff. Go with it. Insulation is good. Geothermal is good. The temperature of the earth underground is really, really reliable. Have you looked into rain barrels? Grey water reuse? A bigger garden? Chickens or ducks? A hybrid car? There's probably plenty of stuff to spend money on that will greenify your life and please you both.

And body heat will continue to keep you warm in winter. I'm sure that's worth some green points right there.
