Is the product just coming to market or something? The cite is three years old.

I worked on 2.5 MW and 5.0 MW wind generator designs when I was at Siemens.  They were three phase wound rotor induction motors.  The excitation that provided the magnetic field was applied to the rotor circuit using adjustable frequency controls.  This eliminated transmissions and allowed a lot of flexibility in adjusting the excitation level, allowing the amount of reactive VARs to be adjustable according to the needs of the power system being supplied.  Not too surprisingly, solving one problem sometimes results in other issues that needed solving, such as bearing currents destroying generator bearings.  (long complicated story).  I left and went to a utility services company, so I don't know where they are at or what systems they are building now.
