    "It indeed sounds difficult," he said. "You know what I think you should do? I think you should just phone it in."
    How he captured the essence of compromise/the mushy middle in so few words (whether intentional or not) made possible or socially neccessary from the politically safe zone of a short term cab ride, must have rung a bell.
    Most Americans don't realize just how difficult the life of a political writer can be, but this cab driver did, and empathized with my plight.

    'Who cares' or 'Are you nuts?' would have been too antagonistic or just impolite, so the cabbie - 'phoned it in' - but then, you already knew that too - lol
