  •  I know a lot of left-wing Ron Paul supporters. (3+ / 0-)

They are generally younger, have a general mistrust of government and all authority, haven't known much about politics up until now, gain much of their info from viral youtube videos and other people's posts on facebook, like his pro-pot and anti-war stances, don't understand the difference between a left-wing/anti-wallstreet critique of the Federal Reserve vs. a Libertarian/pro-GoldStandard villification of the Federal Reserve, often naively adopt and propagate right-wing/tea-party memes because of their anti-government slant, feel there is no difference between the Republican party and the Democratic party, were passionate about Obama in 2008, feel burned by him now and want an alternative they can feel passionate about again.

I'm NOT one of those people but I know a LOT of them and they are very difficult to reason with because they have no idea how much they don't know about politics and policy.  They assume that if you disagree with them you need to "educate yourself"  (a favorite phrase of that crowd) and they will provide you with a totally bonkers 70-minute youtube video to watch.

    •  I also notice that they're almost entirely male (1+ / 0-)

Perhaps women tend to be thinking in a little bit more realistic terms of planning for future and family and the issues related,
while certain men of college age are liable to go through a period of delusions of grandeur: the notion of a secret plot against their lives that only they are young and savvy enough to overcome is very exciting and obsessive to them.

      •  I agree that they are generally male, but... (0+ / 0-)

One of my most passionate and outspoken Paul-bot friends is a very feminine young neo-hippie chick.   Burning Man, belly-dancing, herbal remedies, Sufism, sex-positive, gaia-consciousness...  and RON PAUL!

that Ron Paul will end the wars and legalize pot, the two policy matters at the top of any good hippie's wish list.  (OK, I kid, somewhat.  But you get the idea.)  They probably figure that the rest can simply be put off for a few years while they get these two things done that they've been waiting for for decades.  The idea that "the rest" has also been on the table for decades doesn't seem to occur to them.

Hippies (and post-hippies like moi) want their rock'n'roll, and they don't know why they don't have it yet when it seems so little to ask for in the grand scheme of things (not realizing that this a crucial part of the "what kind of people we're going to be" question).  After a while we get desperate.  (DISCLAIMER:  I don't do "drugs" of any sort, unless you count alcohol.)

The '60s were simply an attempt to get the 21st Century started early....Well, what are we waiting for? There's no deadline on a dream!
