    No, it is the acknowledgement of wrong doing, and the simple words "I am sorry, we were wrong," that are at the root of why reparations are a non-starter in the United States.

    The inability to own our mistakes, to apologize for our failings, is at the root of all that is wrong with this Country, both at the individual and the societal levels.  We can't acknowledge that we torture, so we redefine the word.  We can't apologize for sending our kids to fight a war for profit, so despite all evidence to the contrary, we claim it was "worth it."  Because we can never admit our wrongs, we can never be forgiven, much less can we forgive ourselves.  We can't even see the need.
