Although it's only been tested a few times, the first time a Party nominates someone of a particular religion to Pres or VP slot, that ticket loses.  Southern Democrats ran a Catholic VP in 1860.  Democrats ran a Catholic Pres in 1928.  Democrats ran a Greek Orthodox Pres in 1988.  They ran a Jewish VP in 2000 (and don't tell me about the 2000 election again ... we lost because we had Lieberman, coming and going from the actual voting)

    Mitt is seriously damaged.

For those of you who prefer Bartlett to Obama, re-watch the West Wing. For those who prefer Clinton, re-watch old news videos.

    •  Oh I think I see my confusion (0+ / 0-)

you are saying that he would outperform Romney were he to instead to be the GOP nominee.  Perhaps so, but he is not in the GOP primary now, and thus will not be the GOP nominee nor likely an option for the VP slot.  I thought you meant that he would outperform Romney as a third party candidate if Romney were the GOP nominee, which is not likely.

But I generally agree with you.

but I don't think the moment is ripe quite yet for the GOP to get replaced by a different right of center coalition (unfortunately).  I have always thought it would be great to have a dominant center-left party in power with a libertarian right party as the major opposition party (and always in the minority, but around to keep a check on the excesses of the party in power).  Alas that is not at all the political picture here nor likely to be.

The GOP will be a libertarian party.  A real one, that believes that the free market can solve everything, and that has no room for current social conservatives or NeoCons.

And, there may be three parties, as I suspect that the meddlers will infiltrate the Democratic Party, leading to a Progressive party and a Socially Conservative but Economically Socialist Christian Democratic Party.
