    building a hospital and auto plant is somewhat different from a Wal-Mart or burger king.  It's not as realistic for the management to threaten to close or move the former, so at a certain point it's more profitable for everyone to agree to the union demands.  Cultural factors may come into play, though -- the South has always been hostile territory for unions, ever since national leadership agreed to give blacks and whites the same shake.
