things:  1)  As misguided as he may have been, Paul was apparently sincere in his beliefs and 2) Paul's words were twisted and turned on their head by the author of Acts.

Paul's story just didn't fit the mold of the version it had evolved to by the time Acts was written. If you accept Acts' description of Paul, then the author has succeeded in his redaction of Paul's story.

Paul could never have imagined the mockery of Jesus that many modern evangelicals call Christianity.

You could create your own religion, stand for the exact opposite of what Jesus stood for, and nobody can stop you from calling your religion "Christianity."  But that doesn't mean I have to call it Christianity.  And I don't.

The community of fools might be small were it not such an accomplished proselytizer.
