  •  I think there's a tendency... (9+ / 0-) look at the big picture in abstract terms and not at ground level in practical day to day terms.

We've now been living in this relatively poor / mostly agricultural + tourism region of the South of France for 7 years. (It will be 7 years exactly at the end of this month.)

Yes, there is, and likely will be a bit of austerity creep from the State, but the entire mindset is so different that I can't translate it easily: there is true solidarity, the premise that people must be more equal and their basic needs met is so central that you couldn't extract it from society; they spend on public projects and whatever there is to spend will continue to be spent on the people.

If the euro is atomized tomorrow, yes, I'm sure there'll be some hurt, but the region will go on a lot like before. I'm not really making a very good point here; I guess you've got to live here to appreciate the difference. It's hard to put into words.

Happy new year to you! You sir are a great American and a great fellow expat. I remember when Benjamin Franklin wrote about being in France. Europe is so civilized especially in France that not looking out for your fellow citizen and their human rights to have access to medical for example is unthinkable (in America where is 59 million uninsured.) It isn't just unthinkable but it's doable. That's the sad truth in reality that most Americans who have never lived outside of America don't seem to understand as it is not within their experience. Yet it certainly is true and I think your post points this out very nicely.

sig...You just ran into a hardcore progressive who's just another working stiff with an MBA degree & therefore a vociferous labor union supporter [smile]
