  •  Do you mean "Yi Yi (a one and a two)" (2+ / 0-)

    By Edward Yang?

Yes, that's a great film but unfortunately Director Yang died quite young a few years ago, just in his 50s. That's a great story and a great kid character (Yan-Yan the protagonist).

That name, however, is "Yi-Yi" meaning "one-one" (一一)

Our "Yi-Yi" is actually "Ruò-Yί" (若懿) meaning virtuous, but we call her Yi-Yi which is a common way to address kids here, doubling their middle name. But we also think of her as the homophones "one-one" and "she-she" or "that-that" which all sound the same and a common way to play on words here.

    What about my Daughter's future?

That's very sad; he was obviously a great talent.  The revelation of the mystery about the photography -- I won't spoil it for anyone beyond saying that -- is one of my favorite moments in film (which is, of course, the one I meant.)

I love different cultural naming conventions.  One of my daughters completely disbelieved my explanation of the Russian system.
