  •  We used to call it (10+ / 0-)

the 'head chain' because we had to keep the headsets on at all times.

At my last call center job, I started on day 1 giving myself exactly 2 years to find a different job that no longer chained my head to a desk.

Almost exactly 2 years later, I said goodbye to call center work (forever I hope).

I will vote for Obama, and every Democrat I can vote for, in 2012.

    •  I have been doing it for almost..... (5+ / 0-)

....15 years.  And I actually enjoyed it through most of it.  I like talking to people and helping people without having the face to face contact or hands on work.   I've been really lucky.  But it's just getting old.

I dont' know what I want to do after this, but I know I would like to do something different.

I started a blog. It's still a work in progress but if you're interested, come on by. Dawn of Ambivalence

    •  I used to call my cubicle a playpen (5+ / 0-)

and my headset was the umbilical cord because we were treated like babies. I started out in cs in the early 90s before all the 'evil' software companies devised ways to watch your every action on the phone and computer screen.

I loved doing it then. I could stay on the phone as long as it took to help a customer and didn't have to explain to a supervisor that it was none of their business as to why a woman in her reproductive prime had to go the restroom so many times during a shift.

And don't get me started on the pay......(left cs in 1998 making $15/hr came back to the field 10yrs later and was offered $9.50 to do 10x more calls and expected to offer quality customer service. Hah!)

I hope to goddess I never have to get another phone center job in my life. They now longer want experience, they want a warm body who can take at least 6mos of abuse. The turn over rate is high in this field for very good reasons.
