said 3 out of 4 Republicans repudiated Romney. Well, Grinchy-boy, 87 out of 100 repugs repudiated you! That's far worse.

Gingrich said that Santorum had "a great night" by essentially tying Romney, but that Romney's finish showed that "three out of four Republicans once again repudiated him." Given Romney's money advantage—and the fact that he's been running for five years—Gingrich said Romney's showing underscored the fact that there is a ceiling to his support.

Gingrich himself has been well-known for at least as long as Romney, yet he could only garner just over half the votes Romney did.  He got 13.3% of the vote, which means that 86.7% of Republicans repudiated him.  Yet he seems to see the overall results of the vote as a huge success for himself in some strange way.  This point supports the diarist's argument that Newt is angling to be a kingmaker for the strongest non-Romney, namely Santorum.

Now for a question: To what extent was Santorum's 25% win the result of actual popularity vs. simply the possibility that he was the one of the several rotating non-Romneys that just happened to peak in the polls at the right time to win the caucus?
