a new ecosystem, sitting hidden at the bottom of the ocean, full of weird, alien-looking animals.

One curious thing, unlike some cave animals who have lost their eyes over time because they don't need to see in the dark, that octopus still appears to have eyes, even though it must be very dark down there.

Have they studied the visual capabilities of that octopus?

For some reason the PLOS article didn't even have a picture of the octopus AFAIK. I might have missed something, however. I'm not a biologist so I skimmed the article.

look for my eSci diary series Thursday evening.

When I was a kid we went to some ginormous aquarium and for some reason I was left alone by an octopus display for about 30 minutes and one of them, a little one, just would not stop trying to get my attention.  The thing wanted to play.  It followed my finger up and down the glass, looked me over with its googly eyes, and seemed to be trying to escape since one tentacle kept casing the top of the joint on the container.  I had the best time with it. When I got home I found out how smart, yes smart, they are.  They know colors, can be taught tricks.  How cool would that be, to have a pet octopus that you could teach tricks?

OK...I know it was probably just chasing a kid's finger cause it was bored or whatever, but it COULD have been playing.

        Yeah, I'm a nerd.  Sigh.

Otto the Octopus was the culprit in repeatedly shorting out an external light that was shining into his aquarium, by climbing out the rim of his tank and shooting a jet of water in the light's direction.  They had to have an electrician sleep over to find out what was wrong.

I just think that's awesome.  Maybe I'm easily amused.
