    But I would certainly lay high odds on her being very proficient in speaking Spanish by now. She already knew some Spanish before she was deported. As for the rest, I prefer not to speculate.

      It's true we don't know the whole story right now, but if the boyfriend isn't a 'boyfriend' but instead a predator, that would explain a lot of things, including the lack of contact. Many many run aways end up victims, and this girl's circumstances in Colombia would make that even more likely that this 'boyfriend' was controlling her "through charm or harm" as a character in one of my favorite books would say.

      that she is "very proficient" now. Those words have meaning, and true proficiency is not achieved in such short time under such circumstances. People simply do not pick up languages and become fluent in that manner.

      •  Young people often pick up languages (0+ / 0-)

        very fast. When I was 10, I became totally fluent in a dialect of Malay in 6 months. Spanish, unlike Malay, is a close cousin to English.
