    This is odd, in some ways, since we haven't built new refineries in decades, but as US gasoline consumption continues to shrink, capacity increases.

    No one really wants to mothball old refineries, at least, not the owners, at least.

      on one hand, people weep and wail and gnash their teeth over the loss of high paying, value added manufacturing jobs (like these ones - but obviously not these SPECIFIC ones!).

      And praise Obama up and down (perhaps deservedly so, at least in some respects) for saving GM & Chrysler and the jobs involved.  But a moment of reflection shows that those jobs are at least as bad for the environment in "real time" as the ones under discussion here.  And then in a delicious irony, the product of those jobs - i.e., all the automobilies - increases demand for all the evil, evil oil discussed here.  But yet it's all good.

      Go figure.
