  •  I agree with LOD that Santorum made (5+ / 0-)

the reference to his grandfather to draw the comparison to Romney's grandfather who fled to Mexico because of polygamy.

Santorum is focused on Romney, not only as his political opponent, but also because he is a Mormon.  This is what he had to say in 2007:

    http://articles.philly.com/...

    excerpt page 3:

Would the potential attraction to Mormonism by simply having a Mormon in the White House threaten traditional Christianity by leading more Americans to a church that some Christians believe misleadingly calls itself Christian, is an active missionary church, and a dangerous cult?

Santorum will take every opportunity, including this one, to remind voters that Romney is a Mormon.

    •  You posted that out of context (3+ / 0-)

The last sentence of that article shows Ricky to want to avoid LDS-bashing, if anything:

"I'm more concerned about losing our children to jihadis or a materialistic culture than losing them to Mormonism."

      •  Not out of context at all (6+ / 0-)

Santorum first whistles for the dogs:

...a church that some Christians believe misleadingly calls itself Christian, is an active missionary church, and a dangerous cult?

Then tells them that they can settle down because there are other things equally as frightening.

It's a classic bait and switch and he does it all the time.

It would be the same as my saying, "Some people say that my neigbor beats his wife" and then following it up by saying, "But then I'm also worried that my other neighbor could be watching porn".

I managed to, without directly saying it, convey that both are equally as terrible.
