  •  "fun" is the wrong word, but ... (12+ / 0-)

Conservatives have always struck me as people who are definitely either chasing or trapped in some kind of elevated emotional state. Conservatives are binary extremists for whom everything is either an existential threat or one of society's load-bearing pillars.  There's no room in their worldview for anything that can be let be.

Such things must be either utterly destroyed with extreme prejudice, or clung to and entrenched as if the whole universe depended on their scrupulous observance. Half-measures or a "limited war" in pursuit of practical ends are moral defeats and invite physical defeat.

Heroes and champions are to be cheered and worshiped as intensely and unthinkingly as any popular culture figure, while designated villains deserve an equally passionate and mindless Two Minutes Hate right out of 1984.

Conservatives are people who demand total satisfaction of every need and want and view anything less as equivalent to total deprivation ... and this despite their rhetorical emphasis on grim duty and Christian self-denial.  They're the 1000 pound morbidly obese guy for whom any diet is physically painful despite still eating as much as four normal people.  They're the people who feel that anything less than a Hummer on an Autobahn is slogging through the mud with 100 pounds on your back.  They're people who feel grievously insulted by anything less than fulsome praise.  They're people who believe that thinking, saying, or doing anything other than what they themselves think, say, or do is an act of hate: a negation of everything they are.

Do you know why they call it the American Dream? Because it only happens when you're asleep.
