  •  deep roots? (0+ / 0-)

He left the state when he turned 18 and didn't come back until he was in his 50s and wanted a senate seat. That is carpetbagging, roots or not. FOo reference, Mitt Romney has deeper "roots" in Michigan than Franken in Minnesota.

    •  Well carpetbagging, to me (3+ / 0-)

is running somewhere where you have no connection whatsoever. At least Franken grew up there.

If you spend your entire childhood someplace, those are your roots, and they are deep.  It's not even debatable.

I was born and raised in Iowa, stayed for college so it was 22 years, and have been gone ever since except for a brief summer at a Des Moines law firm when I was 24.  My roots are Iowa, and they are deep.

Now, I realize going back to run for office after such a long absence is difficult, people don't know you and don't identify you with the state.  But claiming deep roots is legitimate for the place you're born and raised and stayed until you're 18.

I think the fact Franken won proves most voters disagree with you.  The same goes in another example for Fred Grandy, "Gopher" on Love Boat who won a Congressional seat in northwest Iowa in the 80s after having left the state for private school as a teenager and moved back i middle age just to run for Congress.  Democrats tried to bludgeon him with the carpetbagger label, and it never stuck.  Iowans accepted him as a prodigal son, show-biz career and lack of political resume be damned.

My dad had lived in Albuquerque for longer than he ever lived in Brooklyn, where he's from, (he moved from there when he was 20 and he lived in Albuquerque til he was 62 (he's now living in Maine) my dad considers himself a New Yorker first and foremost, and he hasn't lived there in over 40 years!

DCCyclone's point is absolutely correct, and calling Franken a carpetbagger is ridiculous.
