  •  Conservatives are insecure. (0+ / 0-)

Being situationally unaware and unable to anticipate what might actually happen tends to have that result.  So, being insecure, conservatives are in need of a good defensive strategy and, since the best defense is a good offense, they're naturally offensive.  Then, since being offensive tends to elicit an aggressive response--i.e. something real to be insecure about and defend against--the conservative comes full circle into the land of self-fulfilling predictions.  Which, to make it even more cogent, is entirely consistent with the belief that the only thing that counts is the idea.  Along with Plato, they believe the idea comes first and all else follows.  Man's intellect coming up with ideas is what makes man god-like, exceptional, the master of the universe.

You call that hubris?  So what?  Did not God give man dominion over all the earth?  We just have to claim it.  All it takes is the idea!

What happens when reality bites them in the ass?  Realists will fix it.

The GOP have to have an enemy, real or otherwise.   When there isn't a real threat, then they fearmonger that there "could be one".

          Hence:  Islam, LGBT, Hispanics, etc.
