that's pretty much the least bad playoff scenario I've heard. I'm old school and want to keep the traditional bowls with their traditional regional bases.

Where are you holding those playoff games? Neutral sites? Are fans going to travel 2, 3 weeks in a row? That's expensive.

I don't disagree with the diarist that the system is corrupt. But I don't see a championship playoff reducing corruption, it would only increase the amount of money coming in.

    •  The NCAA is itself corrupt (4+ / 0-)

That organization came together as an independent cartel and decided for themselves that athletes would not get paid. At the very least thought he current BCS setup is just simply fundamentally unfair. Nothing like the BCS exists in other sports.

I did speak and debate in high school and yes, that had a bracket too.

A championship and playoff would present their own issues, but at least it would end the conference monopolies of the BCS games: the SEC in particular.

the BCS is fundamentally weird, I'll give you that, because it's stuck with the history of college football and the bowls. I would be reluctant to see that change much. As a Pac-12 fan it would anger me extremely to lose the Rose Bowl in exchange for a possible playoff slot.

How do you seed your playoff?  By polls and with no guaranteed berths for conference champions? Better lose that lame poll that lets coaches vote, since they vote strategically.

you've already sort of lost the "guaranteed berths for conference champions". If a conference champion gets into the BCS or that bowl happens to be the BCS that year, the old system no longer applies.

That's why I'm proposing essentially going back to the old system for the four big bowls, and then you can take two out of the rest of the bowls who are willing to act as the hosts for the second round of the playoffs, and then one more for the BCS. Seven big bowl games, and the rest of the stupid bowl games can go to hell!

bids for the other two sites. Out of the five hundred other bowl sites, I'm sure there's a couple that would be interested in upgrading.
