  •  The other thing to remember (17+ / 0-)

is that there are disabilities that are not visible, so just because someone isn't using a cane or a wheelchair doesn't mean they're "faking it".

Case in point: my spouse was a bus driver for almost 30 years (he retired in October). Several years back, I had to report one of his colleagues for harassing a passenger who was using a Regional Transit Discount card; it's a photo ID that entitles the user to pay reduced fares on transit systems around the Bay Area. He accused her of having it under false pretenses, because she obviously wasn't disabled -- turned out she had a heart condition that made it difficult to walk for long distances, and the medications she was taking disqualified her from driving. At any rate, it wasn't his place to question her acquisition of the card; when the RTD cards are issued, the user has to bring in paperwork from their doctor certifying their need for the pass, similar to getting the placard from DMV for parking in accessible parking spaces.

Many people may appear perfectly healthy, but have conditions that either prevent them from driving or require the use of a disabled placard in order to park closer to their destination; I've learned not to question the use of placards, only to disparage those who park in accessible spaces without one.

    •  Or an enlarged heart. (0+ / 0-)

:) Knew someone at school with one. She also smoked (sad) but was a very nice person. I hope she got the strength to quit.
