    I never considered that w/o H's Guide, Neuromancer would seem much farther out there. Good comment.

    H's Guide was my booster shot in college, after absorbing comic/media-savvy "MAD" in grade school (I even enjoyed (most of) Antonio Prohias' "Spy v. Spy" before I could read - I viewed a cousin's collection); Monty Python in high school.

    My sense of.. humor, visual and structural aesthetics, and, as others have said, real-time perception have been distinctly sculpted by the amalgam of these components.

    Throw in slot cars and Lego at an early age and add "The World According to Garp" to the college reading list and the mystery is gone.
