  •  I always turned off whatever program ... (5+ / 0-)

Buchanan's racist visage appeared on.  I recall once year ago that he complained of emerging from the D.C. Metro system and finding a guy playing bongo drums.  I'll never forget the sarcasm dripping from his voice as he said, "Bongo drums!  In MY hometown!"

I had often been at the station where this guy played on a semi-regular basis, and he was quite good -- enough that I'd occasionally dropped a buck or two in his box that he had for donations.  I personally thought he added a lot to the ambiance of our national capital as a true world city.  But Buchanan clearly longed for the segregated D.C. of his youth, where this guy would have been relegated to cleaning toilets where Buchanan clearly thought he (and other people who looked like him) belonged.

As for this having been founded as a Western Christian nation, it simply wasn't one then much more than it is now.  First, there were the aboriginal inhabitants, who at least at the beginning weren't Christian, and who certainly weren't Western.  And there were Spaniards living in Florida and New Mexico before there was ever a United States (and while Spain is European, Buchanan clearly doesn't contemplate Spanish speakers being included in what he considers "Western").

As for the Christian part of it, well, yes and no.  Buchanan's Catholic kind wouldn't have been allowed in most parts of colonial America, and the religious views of the Founding Fathers ranged from the conventionally Christian, to the Unitarianism of Adams, the deism of Jefferson, the skepticism of Franklin, and the frank atheism of Thomas Paine.

What's more, there was a time in this country's history when many people thought the Germans and Irish were no more assimilable than Buchanan apparently thinks more recent immigrants are.

    PROUD to be a Democrat!
