and that means they can (and most often do) make mistakes.

The problem here is the hypocrisy.  The hypocrisy that this couple wants to be the most powerful couple in the world, and they want their previous lives to be "forgiven" and "forgotten".

But. they don't want you and me to have those same freedoms.  Freedom to live together in an unmarried relationshio.  Freedom to have privacy in your affairs. Etc. Etc.

    It's the hypocrisy.

know some of these stories about Santorum and I'm not sure spreading them won't help him more than hurt him (because people will feel sympathy for him and view this as invasion of his family's privacy). But hypocrisy and self-righteousness are the real issues.
I really don't care whether Newt Gingrich has been married once or a dozen times. But if he's going to spearhead the impeachment of the president because of adultery and lying about adultery, he better damn well have a spotless personal history himself.
The reason I was mad at Anthony Weiner was not because he tweeted pix of his penis but because he lied about it. He wasn't hypocritical -- had never claimed to be traditional or to be the quintessence of "family values" or talked about the sanctity of marriage. If when his tweets were discovered he had said, "this is my own private business -- I'm not breaking any laws and my communications are private," then I would have rooted for him staying. But he claimed to have been hacked. Many of us defended him and he let us down.
With Santorum -- it's his sanctimony and unwillingness for people to make their own choices and decisions at hard times in their lives. He would take a couple in a horrible situation of the type he & his wife went through, and force his choices on them rather than allowing them to weigh their options and make the choice best for them and their family. I'm sure he'll attack the spread of these stories about his family as an invasion of his family's privacy, which it is, yet he feels totally justified in invading everyone else's privacy in order to force his values on them.

If, in our efforts to win, we become as dishonest as our opponents on the right, we don't deserve to triumph.
