    as often judicial philosophy overrides issue politics even on that side of things.  I have a very good friend who is uber-conservative in a libertarian vein and has the ambition of getting appointed as a federal judge someday (and plausibly could).  I could see someone as economically conservative and originalist as he is on many issues appealing to a Republican Administrative, while the fact that he's utterly godless and strongly in support of full equality for gays, etc might go unnoticed (or get overlooked knowingly because there would be little in the record that would make it too obvious and allow plausible deniability if there were later complaints).
